How do you plan your next adventure? Do you get the idea from a travel magazine or book? What other ways do you [...] If your are in the mood to learn, even just a little bit, travel is a fabulous classroom and teacher. I am always touting the value of reading guidebooks–cover to cover if you can. It’s so much fun to see what other opportunities there are in the city or country you are visiting, even if you [...] Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not. -Ralph Waldo Emerson The universe has many immutable laws, such as Newton’s laws of motion and Avogadro’s principle. It turns out that the bad passport photo constant is not actually one of them. Who’da thunk it? It is not a law of any type of science that you must look like a vacant-eyed, crazy-haired, drug-addled low life in the photo [...] What are your travel dreams for 2012? Places I want to go outside the U.S.: Thailand, England, France, Belgium, and Poland. Farther-fetched but still on the list of possibilities: South Korea, Japan, Australia, Bali, Costa Rica, Panama. Not sure I can make all of them, but here’s to dreaming big dreams! Where do you want to go? Best I can figure, I’ve traveled almost 50,000 miles this year not counting incidental driving day trips out of the city.
Most of my trips hover in the area of 5,000+ round-trip and involve air travel, but there are a few train trips and car-based vacations in there. A couple of those trips were [...] When it comes to travel, we’ve all got our own unique style. What is yours?
Would you like to trek alone through Nepal? Or take a guided tour through a country or region? Is your preference to dine in the home of a local who is a friend of a friend of a friend [...] a traveler a tourist? a walker a trekker? a voyager a journeyer? a wanderer a pilgrim? a vacationer a sojourner? Traveling by train is so much fun. I can stare out the window for hours on a train, just watching the world go by, always afraid I’ll miss something if I look away. The world you see from the train is so different than the front door world you see when traveling by car. On a train [...] This is a new concept for me…using my contacts when I plan for travel. To reach out for advice about things like lodging, dining, and activities in someone else’s hometown. To plan to meet people, perhaps for a meal or excursion, in a new city or town.
